TruthFoundry 1.12: see what carries a claim and what cuts against it

TruthFoundry answers claims from a signed fact record and writes a daily paper on it. The last release made the answer a written verdict. Version 1.12 is about the evidence underneath it: which way each piece points, how hard the record leans, and how fast you can get from a line of the answer to the thing it rests on.

Evidence sorted by which way it points

Check a claim and the facts behind the answer no longer arrive as one flat list. They come in three groups: what carries the claim, what cuts against it, and what is only context. Each card keeps its own label, so a fact that works against the claim is visible as such instead of sitting in the same column as the ones that support it.

The sort is about our record, never about the world. It says which of our fact lines point which way on the claim you asked. Where the record is genuinely split, you see the split instead of a verdict with an undifferentiated pile of evidence under it.

A truth weight beside the verdict

Next to the verdict there is now a small gauge, the truth weight, showing how hard the record leans on the claim. It reads on a five-step scale that runs from "this seems very untrue" through "uncertain" to "very likely fact."

Press it and it opens the four measures behind it: corroboration, independence, consistency, and source standing. The weight is computed from the structure of the record itself, how many publishers carry the claim, how many independent kinds of witness see it, whether the record disagrees with itself, and how the carrying sources stand. It is worked out the same way every time and it is receipted. It is not a model's opinion about your claim.

When the record holds nothing on a claim, the needle sits at center and the gauge goes quiet. Absence of evidence is stated as absence, not as a verdict of false.

Citations that go to the thing they cite

The answer cites its evidence inline, and those citations are now live. Press one and the page moves to the exact card it refers to and flashes it, whether that is a fact line from the record or a reading from one of our own instruments. A citation that does not point at anything real stays plain text rather than becoming a link that goes nowhere.

The answer also cites more carefully. Each fact is cited on its own rather than swept into a range, and every sentence that states something from the record carries at least one citation you can follow.

Our own instruments, in the answer

The record is not only reporting. TruthFoundry runs its own scanners, and their readings now appear in the answer as a section of their own, marked as ours: domain infrastructure, the networks we watch on chain, federal spending. Each reading carries the date it is good as of, and one that a later reading has replaced says so on its face.

Publishers in the coverage appear as a row at the top of the results, one per publisher with a count when a publisher filed more than once. Press one to jump to what it filed. Publishers are still counted one by one, and syndication is not collapsed into independence.

The page keeps up with the check

The check now reads like a check. The button holds and says it is checking while the work runs, the examination stays where you can watch it instead of below the fold, and the note on how we answer folds away until you want it. The signed receipt for the read sits in plain sight under the answer. The whole surface works on a phone.

A receipt is added trust: it proves who produced the read and that it has not changed since. A weight says how firmly our own record leans. Neither is a claim that the world has been correctly described, and the checker keeps saying what it is doing in its own words: every verdict is about what the record holds.
